Horace is a fruity, sativa-dominant hybrid developed by California-based growers Swamp Boys Seeds. A cross between Banana OG and Swamp Boys’ proprietary Nigerian sativa landrace, this strain offers dynamic, long-lasting effects. Its plants are also exceptionally high yielders when grown correctly. Horace’s THC content has been measured at high levels of between 25% and 30%.
Horace’s flower are visually impressive, standing out with a medium to large size and an elongated conical shape. They have a seemingly hybridized internal structure, with the solid, tightly-packed core often seen in indicas but a fluffy, sativa-like appearance at their outer edges. The long, feathery leaves are a dark shade of forest green, with some phenotypes mixing in shades of dark blue or purple as well. Finally, curly, rust-colored pistils and translucent white trichomes finish off these vivid buds.

A first whiff of Horace’s buds may pick up on some fruity notes, including a possible banana aroma passed on from parent strain Banana OG. A closer inspection might detect some hints of tropical citrus as well. When the flowers are ground up or broken apart, meanwhile they can release more of a skunky, almost fermented odor. Burning them gives off a sour smoke that’s nevertheless easy on the lungs. On the exhale, this smoke has a simultaneously skunky and fruity flavor.
Horace’s high takes effect shortly after users have ingested its pungent smoke. At first, it may exert strange, head-focused effects like flushing in the cheeks or an increased blood pressure around the eyes and temples. Once they become accustomed to these unfamiliar sensations, though, consumers are shot into a new orbit of thinking. Ideas may occur more frequently than usual or may seem to adopt a new complexity, leading to chains of spontaneous free association. This cerebral engagement can help facilitate everything from complicated, analytical work to open-ended creative projects or brainstorms. In social situations, Horace’s buzzy effects may contribute to free-flowing conversation and good vibes.
After about an hour, Horace begins to introduce weighty physical effects to round out its high. A tingle of relaxation that begins at the nape of the neck may start to roll down through the spine and out through the core and limbs. Users who are lucky enough to be lounging at home may start to feel pinned in place; they may also experience a slow easing of any muscular tension. If dosage is increased, this sedation can morph into total couchlock, rendering any physical activity unlikely. Luckily, though, the strain’s initial head high persists for the duration of the high, allowing properly motivated users to carry on lucid conversation or to execute on simple tasks. Because of its potent, two-phase high, Horace is recommended for consumption beginning in early evening or nighttime.
While recreationally useful, Horace’s versatile effects can be a boon to medical cannabis patients as well. For one, the cerebral energy that comes with the high’s onset can help those with attention deficit disorders to work on one task at a time. Additionally, its generally positive mood can temporarily improve mild to moderate cases of depression or stress. On the physical side of things, Horace may dull all kinds of aches and pains. Its anti-inflammatory properties, meanwhile, may soothe common discomforts like cramps and headaches. This strain’s tendency to provoke the munchies may even have a salutary effect on appetite for those dealing with digestive difficulties or undergoing harsh treatments like chemotherapy. However, because its mental stimulation can take a wrong turn into paranoia in the wrong circumstances, Horace is not recommended for patients who are prone to panic or who have a low THC tolerance.
Although Swamp Boys has made seeds of Horace available for sale online, supplies do not seem to be regularly stocked. Those who are able to obtain seeds can cultivate plants indoors or out, with outdoor success depending on a semi-humid climate with daytime temperatures between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. True to their sativa roots, plants can be quite tall and branchy and may require indoor growers to manage their height with occasional pruning. Horace flowers within a long 10 to 11 weeks.
With high THC levels and a sublime balance of mental and physical effects, Horace is a must-try for indica and sativa lovers alike.
